Marie Rose Mukeshimana, mother of two was murdered on the 13th of October, 2017 by her husband, Karegeya Alfred. The couple has been married for seven years, and had two children together. According to the neighbours, the couple has been arguing since they got married. Even though their relatives urged them to divorce, they stayed together, and the arguments carried on, leading up to a tragic end. After killing his wife, Alfred buried her in the garden, hoping that no one will find out, however the neighbours quickly informed the police by, who raided the house, finding the corpse of the Marie Rose. Alfred assumed full responsibility for the murder.
Marie Rose was born in Kigali, on the 8th of October, 1979. A mother of two, she graduated from the University of Rwanda in 2007, with a degree in Geography. Her funeral was held on the 20th of October, 2017.
Marie Rose’s case is not to be treated as a one time strange event. Reacting to this tragic event, the women’s rights umbrella organization Profemme/Twese Hamwe drew attention to the severity and high frequency of extreme domestic violence and issued the following declaration: http://profemmes.org/spip.php?article68 (accessible in Kinyarwandan). The declaration, signed by the leader of the NGO Jeanne d’Arc Kanakuze, called upon everyone, including neighbours, government officials and ordinary citizens to give more attention to cases of domestic violence. They asked everyone to report if they thought their neighbour was in danger and called for more serious punishment against domestic violence perpetrators.
